We have only been in the Bahamas for one day and we are loving it! We left New Bern on Tuesday morning and arrived in Abacos, Bahamas, on Sunday morning just as a cold front was blowing in. The conditions were a bit blustery as we made our way through the cut and anchored. Unfortunately, the last two days of our passage, we had engine trouble and couldn’t use it (more about that later). We had hoped to motor up a very narrow channel into a marina where we would clear into Customs, but without an engine, we changed plans and headed to the next island south (downwind) and dropped our anchor under sail. The island is uninhabited with some high limestone bluffs and we have it to ourselves!
We dinghied over to clear into Customs today—a 4-mile ride in our little inflatable dinghy! Having a delicious lunch at the marina while doing a load of laundry—we feel like cruisers already!
The water is as gorgeous as the pictures! It’s a beautiful turquoise color wherever the bottom is sand. Against the white sand beaches, it is so picturesque. In the ocean, during the passage, we kept staring at the water color. At times it was almost a royal dusky purple and other times as we got closer to the Bahamas, it was the color of an old Noxema jar—an iridescent blue! So good to be here!
